Any competition with an asterisk (*) is an open competition. This means it is not leveled and open to any competitor.
Leveled Reading ComprehensionA multiple-choice competition in which
2 students per level can participate. Students will be given texts in the target language and will be asked reading comprehension questions in English. Open REading Comprehension *An open division reading comprehension exam in which students will read complex passages in the target language and responded comprehension questions in the target language. Two participants per language per school.
LEveled Poetry Recital1 student per level (2 for German) will read one of two poems.
Full instructions for poetry competition are found here. DEADLINE: 11:59 on April 14th Timed Poster * (open)The theme for the poster will be announced the morning of the competition. Students will be given 2 hours to plan and prepare their poster, which must be turned in to the poster check-in table by 11a.m. No posters will be accepted after 11a.m. We accept one poster per language, per school, and up to 2 students per poster can participate. All materials that can be used will be provided, but schools must still register so an adequate amount of supplies are available. Posters must have some of the language of the competition (French, German, or Spanish). Schools need to make sure that a 3 x 5 identification card (available at the check-in table) is stapled to the back on the bottom right corner with the name(s) of the student(s) who worked on the poster, school, and language. Posters will be judged on the following criteria:
Creative Writing - Editorial *In this event competitors will be tasked with sharing their thoughts on the world through the lense of the target language as they draft and submit an informative essay about the topic provided. This year students have two options that are will use to help guide their writing. As there may be some overlap, they will respond to one or both of the following questions: 1) Who was the most culturally, socially, politically significant person in 2022/23 and why? 2) What was the most culturally, socially, politically significant event in 2022/23 and why?
Essays should include, introduction, thesis, body and conclusions. Competitors will be rated based on the following: structure, clarity and complexity of language and expression, cultural literacy and topicality. One submission per school. Maximum word limit: 1000. Culture/Geography *Two rounds: the preliminary competition and the final round. A team of 4 students participates in both events, but the preliminary round is an individual competition. Based on the results of the preliminary competition (multiple-choice test), two teams in each language will be selected to go to the final round.
During the finals, teams will answer questions using a buzzer system. Questions will be in English. Students may discuss with each other before buzzing-in. Students can buzz-in at any time during the reading of the question, but they will have to answer without hearing the rest of the question. If the answer is incorrect, the other team will have a chance to hear the rest of the question and answer it. There are 15 questions in the final round however, the first team to score 6 points wins or the team who has the most points at the end of the 15 questions. If there is a tie, the team that earned the 1st point of the game wins. Questions will be over the following categories: food, drink, history, government, politics, literature, art, current events, science, education, daily life, clothing, music, environment, sports, entertainment, population, countries, capitals, location, mountains, rivers, lakes, climate, imports, exports, flora, fauna and/or borders. Translation
A multiple-choice competition in which participants choose the correct translated phrase in English or the target language. This competition will cover on the Vocabulary and Grammar level topics. Two participants per level, per language may participate.
GrammarA multiple-choice competition in which participants choose the correct grammar concept or sentence completion. Two participants per level, per language may participate.
German level 3 and 4 topics will be combined for level 3 competitions. Each level is an extension of the topics of previous levels. Level 1: possessive adjectives, adjective agreement, regular/irregular verbs in present indicative, noun articles, subject pronouns, singular/plural nouns, negation Level 2: demonstrative adjectives, interrogative adjectives, past tense (preterit), reflexive verbs, imperative tense (commands), comparisons, adverbs Level 3: imperfect tense (narrative past), prepositions, simple future tense, conditional tense, direct object pronouns, indirect object pronouns, relative pronouns, pronouns of quantity, prepositional phrase pronouns Level 4: demonstrative pronouns, interrogative pronouns, past perfect tense, future perfect tense, conditional past tense, subjunctive mood VocabularyA multiple-choice competition in which participants choose the correct meaning for the given word or expression. Two participants per level, per language may participate.
German level 3 and 4 topics will be combined for level 3 competitions. Each level is an extension of the topics of previous levels and contain regular and irregular verbs that pertain to the given topic. Level 1: greetings & goodbyes, days, months, dates, time, classroom objects & subjects, family members, numbers to 1,000, adjectives, colors, food, interrogatives, recognition of nouns and gender, restaurant, market, café Level 2: weather, body parts, sports, travel-plane & train, house, animals, ordinal numbers, shopping, clothing Level 3: travel-car, plane & train, food & cooking, places in the city-bank, post office, train station, city hall, hotel, hostel, & stores, hobbies, nationalities & countries, instruments Level 4: professions, health & sickness, hospital & medicine, accident, technology, household chores, holidays, emotions, idiomatic expressions |
